As a world leader in the design and manufacturing industry, Active Dynamics is seeking an experienced Automation and Robotics Specialist to join its Toronto team. This posting is for an existing, immediate vacancy.
The primary responsibility of this role is to lead projects in the planning, design development, and implementation of automation solutions for manufacturing processes; integrate and program electrical components and robots; lead improvement initiatives; and ensure systems and processes meet quality and production objectives safely and efficiently.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Create detailed automation design proposals including controls design, electrical and pneumatic design, hardware and component specification, testing, commissioning, and validation.
- Develop and verify safety systems and understand safety risk assessments.
- Interpret, read, and write electrical and electronic schematics and diagrams, as well as basic hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams.
- Prepare and release drawings for new projects, record changes diligently, and release updated drawings.
- Install, program, and integrate PLCs, HMIs, robots, tooling, drives, actuators, sensors, vision systems, start-up, debugging, and compliance with internal and customer standards.
- Program Fanuc, Yaskawa, and Kuka welding and material handling robots.
- Program and maintain robots online and offline using CIM Station, Fanuc Weld Pro, MotoSim, and Robot Studio.
- Provide ideas to automate manual operations and assist with ROI studies for justification and approval.
- Integrate specialized hardware and software into manufacturing systems to improve automation, control, efficiency, throughput, and cycle time.
- Prepare training documentation, work instructions, and procedures for handover to production and maintenance.
- Manage or assist manufacturing engineers with equipment and tooling suppliers through quotation, design, build, and installation stages for new programs, improvements, and retrofits.
- Participate in APQP meetings and provide input on DFM and GDT analysis, PFMEA, control plans, process capability studies, DOEs, poka-yoke, error-proof plans, root cause analysis, and lessons learned.
- Assist in lab tests, compile and analyze test data, and coordinate equipment design reviews with manufacturing engineers and suppliers.
- Support equipment sample runs, trial runs, buy-offs, run-at-rate milestones, PPAP requirements, and compliance with Active, OHSA, ESA, and CSA standards.
- Conduct training for associates on new equipment and processes and support handover to production and maintenance.
- Record lessons learned and ensure carry-over on future programs, processes, and equipment.
- Establish Active new machine equipment specifications.
- Work closely with plant maintenance staff troubleshooting electrical, electromechanical, pneumatic, electronics, and PLC programming issues.
- Support electrical component specifications and provide guidance on machine and equipment purchases.
- Participate in process and equipment root cause analysis and implement solutions to improve and sustain OEE.
- Maintain an open issues matrix for assigned projects and tasks and ensure timely completion.
- Lead and participate in 8D, 5 Why, RCA, and CI meetings for customer complaints and failures.
- Work with the maintenance/tooling manager and skilled trades team to increase machine uptime and close equipment issues.
- Support departmental best practices and KPIs for productivity, cost, quality, and safety.
- Perform other duties as required.
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor's or college degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Robotics, Automation, Mechatronics, or Systems Engineering.
- P. Eng. designation from PEO is desirable.
- Project management experience or PMP designation is desirable.
Qualifications and Experience
- 5-10 years of verifiable controls and automation experience in the automation industry or a manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical or similar packages.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams and electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics.
- Working knowledge of ladder, function block, and structured text logic; industrial PCs; PLCs including Beckhoff, Siemens, and Allen-Bradley; and electrical circuits including contractors, relays, control voltage, limit switches, and proximity sensors.
- Hands-on experience applying electronics, pneumatics, and electromechanical devices.
- Experience programming Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, Omron, and Siemens PLCs and HMIs.
- Ability to perform basic wiring work and general installations, identify causes of problems, and develop correction methods.
- Knowledge of troubleshooting industrial networks, machine safety circuits, and applications.
- Understanding of VFD, DC, and servo drive systems.
- Proficiency in industrial machine controls, electrical systems, PLCs, and HMI programming.
- Vision systems experience is an asset.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office; Visual Basic and Excel macros are highly desirable.
- Knowledge of MIG spot welding and tube bending processes is an asset.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with strong technical communication skills and minimal supervision.
- Ability to work under demanding schedules and adapt to changing directions.
- Excellent English communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
- Basic understanding of WHMIS, IMDS, ergonomics, and health and safety regulations.
- Willingness and ability to travel.
