MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is rebuilding American industrial capability for a new era of autonomy, robotics, and electrification. We are the only U.S. company with a fully integrated rare earth supply chain—from mining and refining to advanced metal and magnet manufacturing. Our products include both the critical materials used to make permanent magnets and the finished magnets themselves—enabling next-generation technologies in robotics, automation, aerospace, transportation, defense, and energy systems. These materials are the foundation of physical AI—the convergence of computation, movement, and control. We hire ambitious, mission-driven people who want to tackle complex challenges and shape the future of strategic industries. Our culture is rooted in teamwork, resiliency, and integrity, with a deep commitment to operational excellence and national purpose. MP is rapidly evolving from a materials producer into a leading U.S. manufacturer—and our people are driving that transformation.
Position Overview: We are seeking a results-driven Instrumentation Engineer to support the design, implementation, and optimization of instrumentation systems for our greenfield metals, alloys, and magnet-making facility. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence the foundational design of a world-class manufacturing plant and contribute directly to the next generation of American industrial capability. The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver with a strong background in instrumentation design and integration, who thrives in multidisciplinary environments. You will collaborate across engineering teams and vendors to deliver standardized, reliable, and scalable instrumentation solutions that enhance process control, safety, and operational excellence.
Position Responsibilities: Manage instrumentation engineering tasks across the full project lifecycle—from concept and specification through design, implementation, and commissioning. Develop and review engineering documentation, including instrument datasheets, loop diagrams, I/O lists, and technical bid evaluations. Conduct technical review and inspection of vendor and contractor designs, ensuring alignment with project requirements, MP standards, and industry best practices. Troubleshoot and resolve issues at key inspection milestones, ensuring compliance and avoiding costly delays or rework. Support the standardization and continuous improvement of instrumentation systems across all units and processes. Collaborate closely with Process, Electrical, Mechanical, and Controls Engineering teams to ensure integrated system design and smooth project execution. Participate in validation and commissioning activities alongside EHS and engineering teams to ensure functionality, safety, and regulatory compliance. Interface with vendors and internal supply chain teams to secure instrumentation equipment and services that meet quality, schedule, and performance standards. Contribute to team capability development by participating in design reviews, mentoring sessions, and engineering best practice discussions. Assist in aligning instrumentation design with broader electrical and automation standards across the site. Ensure all instrumentation work complies with codes, regulations, and safety standards, proactively addressing non-compliance to avoid downstream issues. Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent relevant experience). Minimum of 3 years of experience in the specification, configuration, validation, and troubleshooting of industrial instrumentation systems. Demonstrated experience developing and reviewing detailed design documents and drawings. Hands-on experience with instrumentation in process industries, including sensors, transmitters, actuators, and control interfaces. Familiarity with industrial Ethernet protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP). Ability to prioritize tasks, adjust to shifting priorities, and maintain focus on key project milestones and objectives.
Desired Qualities: Working knowledge of hazardous area classification and protection methods (e.g., intrinsic safety, explosion-proof). Experience developing instrumentation design packages, including instrument index, datasheets, I/O lists, and cause & effect diagrams. Familiarity with 3D modeling, conduit/tray routing, and mechanical supports for instrumentation installation. Strong teamwork and communication skills; able to work independently or collaboratively depending on project needs. Flexible, adaptable, and open to learning new tools and technologies. Creative mindset with a drive for innovation and continuous improvement. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook); advanced Excel skills preferred.
