Job Title: Automation & Controls Engineer Job Description: The Role: Our Chaska site is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Automation & Controls Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of manufacturing automation systems. In this role, you will be responsible for architecting and implementing advanced control systems, supporting plant operations, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
You will partner closely with cross-functional teams including production, maintenance, and engineering to improve equipment performance, reliability, scalability, and safety across the site.
What You’ll Do: Design, develop, and implement PLC, HMI, SCADA, and robotic control systems for manufacturing equipment Lead automation projects from concept, design, and programming through commissioning and production support Develop and maintain control system architectures, electrical designs, and documentation (schematics, network diagrams, etc.) Program and troubleshoot PLCs (Allen-Bradley preferred), HMIs, vision systems, and robotics platforms Optimize system performance, cycle times, and reliability using data-driven analysis and continuous improvement methodologies Diagnose and resolve complex electrical, controls, communication,
and system integration issues Specify, integrate, and support industrial components including sensors, instrumentation, servo systems, VFDs, motion control, and safety systems Manage and support industrial networks (Ethernet/IP) and connectivity between systems Collaborate with mechanical and manufacturing engineering teams to design automated equipment, tooling, and fixtures Lead commissioning, validation, and startup activities for new production lines and capital equipment Ensure compliance with safety standards, electrical codes, and company policies Maintain and improve documentation, version control, and change management processes
Support digital transformation initiatives including data collection, MES integration, and smart factory technologies Provide technical leadership and mentorship to technicians on automation best practices.
Collaborate with global teams to standardize automation platforms and processes. Stay ahead of emerging technologies and recommend strategic improvements.
Communicate technical concepts, risks, and solutions clearly to stakeholders at all levels Adhere to PACE values – people & teamwork, accountability, integrity & trust, creativity and innovation, dedication to excellence What We Seek: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field Must be 18 years or older and have the right to work in the US without sponsorship 3–7+ years of experience in automation and controls engineering within a manufacturing environment Strong experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley/Logix platform preferred) Experience with HMI/SCADA systems (FactoryTalk,
Ignition, or similar) Knowledge of robotics systems (FANUC preferred), including programming and integration Proficiency in electrical system design and ability to read and develop schematics Experience with motion control systems, servo drives, and coordinated motion applications Knowledge of industrial communication protocols and network architecture Experience supporting and leading equipment commissioning and startup activities Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, controls, and integrated systems Familiarity with safety systems (lockout/tagout, machine safety circuits, risk assessments) Experience with CAD tools (SolidWorks,
SolidWorks Electrical, or similar preferred) Knowledge of data systems, MES integration, or Industry 4.0 technologies is a plus Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills Ability to work independently and lead cross-functional initiatives Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. at times Must be able to stand and walk for the duration of the shift Ability to use hand tools and perform repetitive motions such as bending, twisting, and reaching Ability to work at heights using ladders, lifts, or platforms as needed Ability to obtain forklift certification if required Works well independently and within a
