A Day in the Life:
The Automation Specialist is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and supporting industrial control system software and hardware technologies across facility operations. This role manages system databases, troubleshoots automation issues, develops and commissions control system enhancements, and ensures all automation activities comply with company standards. By providing technical expertise, supporting system reliability, and guiding continuous improvement, the Automation Specialist directly contributes to efficient production, operational stability, and the safety of personnel and equipment.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Develop, document, test, and commission automation repairs and project work related to facility control systems.
- Ensure compliance with company automation development and support standards, maintaining consistency across facilities.
- Assist with research, analysis, design, testing, and implementation of core computing systems supporting automation, including virtualization, endpoint protection, networking, backup systems, security, and databases.
- Participate in the configuration, installation, testing, upgrading, and production support of software modules, including both vendor packages and in‑house solutions.
- Evaluate new control system hardware/software, recommending improvements to enhance operational efficiency and facility performance.
- Diagnose and prioritize incidents in automated environments, investigate root causes, and apply appropriate resolutions or escalate as required.
- Monitor and resolve automation system problems, implementing preventive measures to avoid repeat issues.
- Collaborate with maintenance teams and contractors on installation, commissioning, and quality control of automation systems.
- Plan daily, weekly, and monthly work tasks to meet project timelines and budget expectations.
- Support site safety, health, environmental, and security programs, communicating safety procedures to site staff and contractors.
- Perform other duties as required to support automation and facility operations.
Skills/Experience Requirements:
- Ability to make data‑driven decisions and maintain a customer‑focused mindset.
- Strong collaboration, communication, and continuous learning orientation.
- Capability to solve problems proactively and manage workload during change or challenging conditions.
- Experience in both low‑ and high‑end automation development methods.
- Proficiency in HMI and PLC system design, software development, or computing infrastructure.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively.
- Post‑secondary degree in a related discipline or Journeyperson certification in Electrical or Instrumentation.
- Minimum four (4) years of progressively responsible industrial experience, including at least three (3) years working with HMI, PLC design, software development, and/or core computing infrastructure.
- Ability to provide on‑call technical support and work nights/weekends as needed.
