Job Title: Manufacturing Systems & Data Analytics Intern

Location: Salt Lake City, UT

Mentor: Continuous Improvement Manager

Job Purpose: The Manufacturing Systems & Data Analytics Intern will support plant operations through advanced data aggregation, dashboard development, and Manufacturing Execution System (MES) enhancement initiatives. This role focuses on improving data visibility, strengthening manufacturing analytics, and supporting automation system improvements to drive informed decision-making across the organization.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Aggregate and structure manufacturing data from multiple sources and databases
  • Develop and enhance interactive dashboards using Power BI
  • Build automated reports to support operational, quality, and performance metrics
  • Utilize SQL, Excel, and database systems for data extraction and analysis
  • Apply Python or R for data manipulation, analysis, and process optimization
  • Assist with Manufacturing Execution System (MES) enhancement initiatives
  • Support PLC-related improvements (Allen-Bradley, Siemens)
  • Collaborate on industrial networking and communication protocol integration
  • Help troubleshoot system issues and support process improvements
  • Ensure alignment with safety standards and regulatory requirements

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this internship, the Manufacturing Systems & Data Analytics Intern will:

  • Aggregate and clean manufacturing data from multiple sources and databases
  • Write SQL queries to extract and manipulate operational data
  • Use Python or R for data analysis and process improvement insights
  • Design and deploy interactive dashboards in Power BI
  • Translate complex datasets into clear, actionable business insights
  • Understand the structure and function of a Manufacturing Execution System (MES)
  • Support MES enhancement initiatives within a live production environment
  • Gain exposure to PLC programming platforms (Allen-Bradley, Siemens)
  • Understand industrial networking and communication protocols
  • Apply safety standards and regulatory considerations in automation projects
  • Apply structured problem-solving in a manufacturing setting
  • Improve cross-functional communication between engineering, IT, and operations
  • Develop project documentation and technical reporting skills
  • Strengthen time management and prioritization in a plant environment
  • Contribute to data-driven decision-making initiatives

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Data Analytics, Computer Science, or related field
  • Experience with SQL, Excel, and database systems
  • Programming knowledge in Python or R
  • Familiarity with Tableau or Power BI
  • Understanding of APIs and system integrations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to translate data into actionable insights
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities
